Happy Birthday Gramps!
In all the excitement of Maren's play, we neglected to post this important event in a timely manner.o
Gramps turned 70 on Saturday, August 1!

Even for such a milestone, Gramps was typically humble and didn't want a big to-do. So the kids were happy to help put together a small celebration!
Surprise!!
o
There's no better gift for your 70th birthday than a big decorative yard frog...
...unless you also receive a giant 6 ft. inflatable snake (to scare away bothersome rabbits!)
Gramps' current yard nemesis, who eats his flowers. Not this exact bunny, but one like it.
The snake, ready for action!
Brave snake handler Maren takes it out for a test run.

Hume Lake! Part 2
Our trip to Hume Lake ended on a high note...
o
Behold Derek's impressive catch!!

o
As we were packing up our gear after an unsuccessful morning of fishing, Derek managed to snag this small but mighty fellow. It might as well have been 8 feet long, the kids were so excited! Well done, Derek!

FUNDERLAND!
Thought I'd post a fairly up-to-date adventure before returning to our coverage of Hume Lake.
o
On Monday, we joined Chris and Sydney Strange for a trip to local Sacramento amusement park Funderland, which lived up to its name.
o
Funderland: who knew?? Apparently it's been in Sacramento since 1947, but we native Sacramentans had never heard of it. One inexpensive yellow wristband purchased at the ticket counter = a whole day of unlimited rides. Cool!

o
First stop: the Log Ride.

o
Sydney and Deacon make a "two headed guy".

o
Airplanes!

o

o
This would be the last photo of the day of the kids before they were transformed...

o
I'm not a person who enjoys roller coasters and went only once to keep Maren from flying out. I was devastated when my beloved sunglasses went flying off my head. The roller coaster guy looked all over and we decided they probably flew into a dense, bottomless shrub, never to be found again. At least it wasn't the camera... or Maren, I kept telling myself.

Great minds - Chris and I take the same pic at the same time from opposite angles.

Happy train riders.
Chris and the kids ride the forward-backward spin thingy. I did a slightly closer inset of them because I thought it was funny that they all had the same expression.
A very intense little roller coaster - Chris and the kids loved it.

Then we were in line for the train, and there they were!!
o
Then we got to meet up with the third Strange, Mike, for dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory. So it was a great day with a happy ending!!

Hume Lake! Part 1
Our trip to Hume Lake was postponed a day when Deacon came down with something, but we finally made it there on July 2.
o
The cabin!
Reunited with cousin/favorite person Elias, the kids wasted no time getting ready to check out the lake!

o

o
Uncle Phillip assists Glamour Girl on a hill.
o
MONTHS of planning led to this moment - Maren is finally in Hume Lake!!
Fishing at dusk! A bunch of pics.
o
Grandma looks on with approval.
