12-30-08: Snow Day

Today was a beautiful day in the Sierras, perfect for a trip to the snow!
0
Grandma, Grandpa, Derek, Terri, Deacon, Maren, Jana & Elias piled in Grandpa's van and headed up Highway 50 toward South Lake Tahoe.

o
Maren, ready to go.

o
Found a nice place a few miles west of Tahoe... Elias was the first to slide down the snowy slopes!

o
Deacon played in the snow for the very first time!

o
So did Maren, who wasn't sure what to make of the deep drifts she kept sinking into.

o
Building a snowman!

o
One day before his 75th birthday, Grandpa was the biggest kid of all!

o
Playin' and thinkin'.

o
As usual, Grandma held the coats, bags, and whatever else we gave her.

o
Derek, ready for a fight.

o
After taking many snowballs to the back from his ruthless uncle, Elias finally got even!

o
The parking lot was just as much fun as anywhere else!

o
Heading back to Sacramento.

o
Grandma and Grandpa

o
We warmed up later with a great lunch at Buttercup Pantry in Placerville, CA.

o
Happy cousins!
o
We'll catch up with Christmas pics pretty soon... we'll also have full coverage of Grandpa's 75th and Terri's 40th birthday celebrations, tomorrow and Thursday.

12-27-08: Extreme Coziness!

Finally... a new post! Things have been busy up here at the Sacramento bureau.
o
Thought we'd start catching up... here are a few pictures from Gramps' visit to our house in Burbank WAAAAAY back on 12/19. Gramps reads a bedtime story to the kids, who got to camp out in front of the fire and the Christmas tree!

Took this on the northbound I-5 at the grapevine yesterday!

Open road and nice scenery -- we had a great trip up north with Gramps.  More to come soon from Sacramento!

Before we left the house...

Singin'

o
Maren's class (movie)...

o
Deacon and David Lee sing a song; David Lee's dad called them the "Two Tenors."

o
Preach it, Deacon! (Movie)

o
Vincent and Deacon celebrate a job well done!
o
Gramps would have been there, too, were it not for the snow on the grapevine today! We're looking forward to his visit tomorrow. Then we're all packing up and heading north.
o
So for now, we'll sign off from Burbank... until after the New Year, the AFB will be reporting from our remote headquarters in Sacramento!

A STELLAR birthday party!

Maren's friend from music class, Christopher, just turned 5! Today we had a blast at his birthday party up at Stough Canyon Nature Center in Burbank.
o
Christopher LOVES Star Wars, so it was a Star Wars-themed party! Christopher's dad even arranged an academy-style Jedi training session in which each Padawan received a lightsaber and got to train with Master Yong-Wan-Lee-Obi, who showed impressive lightsaber skills of his own!

o

o
The Padawans were remarkably well-behaved.

o
But their skills were about to be tested by a surprise visitor! (Movie)

o
Christopher was the first to challenge the Dark Lord of the Sith (surprise: it was Derek!)

o
We hadn't told our kids that Daddy would be playing Darth Vader, but unlike Luke Skywalker, Deacon suspected it from the start.

o
The epic battle, father and son.

o
...and daughter!

o
Vader tried to lure them to the dark side, but they drove him away!

o
Victorious, each of the Padawans earned a certificate to go with their lightsaber!

o
Deacon in a Luke-like pose. (I know, Star Wars fans, I know, Luke's lightsaber is really blue! Or green!)

o
The cool thing about having a birthday party in Burbank is that one of the dads/a real Disney animator might doodle a picture of you on a tablecloth!

o
As if the Jedi Academy training session wasn't exciting enough, we then hiked up to the top of the Verdugo mountains and could see just about all of Los Angeles! Here are Lori, Yong and Christopher, on top of the world.

o
Lori and Terri, wives of Jedi and Sith.

o
Deacon contemplates taking flight.

o
In the car on the way home, Deacon announced that he wants to have his birthday party there, too. But instead of fighting Darth Vader, the kids could be cavemen with clubs fighting a Woolly Mammoth. He insists it'll be no problem for Daddy to come up with THAT costume!
o
We had a great day, and wish Christopher a very happy 5th birthday!

A Visit with Santa!

The kids were THRILLED to see Santa today at the Burbank Town Center mall!
The kids had a big hug (and a lot to say) to Santa, who listened enthusiastically and gave them coloring books when their visit was over.
o
With 17 days left until Christmas Eve, we were happy that Santa was able to take time out of his busy schedule to come to Burbank for a little while. Ho Ho Ho!

BREAKING NEWS: Earthquake 12-5-08

Mag. 5.1 Earthquake 8:19 p.m. 12/5/08
o
26 km (16 miles) WNW (293 degrees) of Ludlow, CA
56 km (35 miles) WNW (297 degrees) of Bagdad, CA
57 km (35 miles) E (97 degrees) of Barstow, CA
188 km (117 miles) ENE (63 degrees) of Los Angeles Civic Center

o
Saw Christmas tree swaying, then felt side-to-side swaying... kids were drawing and didn't feel it! We did remember to go to our "safe spot" this time, though. So all's well in Burbank.
o

Stay tuned to the AFB for all breaking earthquake news!

Disney Studio Lot Christmas Tree Lighting 2008

Tonight we went to the annual Christmas tree lighting at the Disney studio lot in Burbank!
o
o
o
o

o
o
o

Truth be told, it was a big dud compared to years past, due to the economy. No snow or big production numbers. Just Mickey and Minnie...

o

o
...and popcorn.

o
Actually, it was kind of nice. The Disney studio choir sang as the switch was flipped...

o
...but the lack of snow was still a bummer. An actual Disney, Roy E. Disney (son of Walt's brother, Roy O. Disney) was on hand to boost spirits (and sales of his latest book).

o
The Studio store was PACKED, and I got out as fast as I could.

o
At least Derek got some nice shots of the tree.

o
It wasn't all so disappointing, though -- Derek got the best parking space we've ever gotten in the dreaded Zorro parking structure...

o

o
Close to the elevator and everything!

o
We ditched the crowded and overpriced studio commissary and headed to Burbank's premiere nightspot for dinner.

o
You have to admit, this looks REALLY good.

o
And finally... I just couldn't finish this post without including this picture of Mary and Susan from last year. Hopefully the snow will be back next year!
