Trading Card FUN!™

Welcome back to Trading Card FUN!™

Today's card takes us back to San Francisco in December, 1990, when Derek and I shot our Film 380 final projects together in one day.

Derek's project, Stefan's Wad, was completed by lunchtime, and we somehow found time for a leisurely meal at the Great Steak and Fry in Stonestown Galleria before launching into my project, Based on a True Story.

Here's Card #5: GREASE IS THE WORD!™

And since it's referenced on the card, and in honor of our recent visit with Buffy...

...in celebration of its upcoming 20th anniversary...

...from the Voelzavision Studios Vault...

We are very proud to present - in glorious Super 8mm -

Based on a True Story™!

Note: after the logo & fanfare, there's no sound for about a minute. Then turn it up!

I'm laughing as I write this. Derek was the perfect "hero" and Buffy was the perfect "damsel in distress"-- and BOTH were flawless in their overacting glory!!
Hope you got an "A" on it!!

I completely forgot that we had done this! OMG! Best movie ever with an amazing sense of build up and drama! Hitchcockian.

Nice wrench work Derek! OUR HERO!

To think we'd only known him for two days or something! You know, in the scene where he drives up onto the sidewalk, he almost hit me with my own car. MY OWN CAR! You can see the camera jerk down as I jump out of the way.

But as our dear Derek would say, "Pain is temporary - film is forever."

It wouldn't have been possible without the fans. They're the ones who deserve the credit!

But really, Buffy and Christy were the perfect co-stars. They were wonderful to work with and they threw themselves into their roles... But it all would have been nothing without the steady guidance and brilliant vision of our amazing director, Terri Voelz!

One more thing - all of that really did happen to Christy and me. And we'd had a fire on the stove the same day.

So then the sink wouldn't shut off and was overflowing, and we were running back and forth bailing out water in the tub - and running into each other, too.

I don't know if I spilled as much water on her as Buffy did in one of their more spectacular movie crashes, but I know that hallway carpet was pretty wet for awhile (from the real incident and then from filming!)

It did seem like an eternity before the real plumber got there, too. He was nowhere near as handsome as our movie plumber, but our gratitude to him as portrayed in the movie was not exaggerated!

I modeled my performance on a real plumber in Oakland. I went on several ride-alongs in the plumbing van on actual emergency calls, and lived as a plumber for three months prior to filming. I wanted to get the feel for how these guys live, work, and talk. Only later, on the day of shooting, was I informed it was to be only a 5 minute silent movie with no dialogue. Bob DeNiro called me later and said "Welcome to the club!"
