This Day In History: October 17, 1989

Today is the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake!

I was going to school at San Francisco State University at the time and lived off-campus just south of the city in Pacifica, CA. I picked up my video camera soon after the 5:04 p.m. magnitude 7.1 earthquake... here's 2 1/2 minutes of what I filmed that night (and a bit the next day with my friend Buffy, who you'll hear in the video).

I have not seen that video for 20 years! Now I want to watch all of it! Your Dad and I remember the fear we felt, knowing you were there, in the midst of all that destruction, and the gratitude we felt when we knew you were alright! Still grateful today!

You have the distinction of having gotten one of the few phone calls through to San Francisco right after the earthquake, thanks to Dad realizing what was happening during the World Series broadcast!

What a crazy world we lived in before we had cell phones...
